We made an amazing discovery on the edge of our orchard a few weeks ago, a volunteer mulberry tree! I’m judging it’s age to be about 4-5 years, since that area was cleared previously. I hadn’t tasted mulberry since I was about 8 years old, and when I tasted it again my brain yelled, “Yes! I remember this taste!” It was a really fun experience.

I decided to try to propagate some more trees and so far they seem to be in the process of leafing out, which I’m very excited about. It’s really interesting to see the differently shaped leaves that are present on the tree. I think I even had 4-5 different leaf shapes on the same branch! After doing some research about the mulberry tree and learning there is white, red, and black types, I believe we have a red mulberry tree.

What I find so unique about the tree, besides the many leaf shapes, is that the berries form separately along the branch, hanging beneath the leaves so you can only see them unless you’re standing directly under the tree looking up.
