I always grow dill in my gardens. I love the smell of dill, and of course that means I enjoy eating dill in all those yummy summertime dishes: potato salad, creamy cucumber salad, and of course, dill pickles!

Great companions to dill include asparagus, beans, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, chervil, corn, cucumber, kohlrabi, lettuce, onion, and tomatoes. Dill attracts the parasitic wasps that feed on the tomato horn worm.? However, once dill starts to set seed it can negatively impact the growth of your tomatoes and should then be harvested.

Poor companions include caraway, carrots, peppers, eggplant, fennel, lavender, and potatoes. Dill can actually cross pollinate with carrots as well as other plants from the umbelliferae family such as angelica, caraway, carrots, and fennel.

Dill does a great job of attracting a bunch of insects that are beneficial in your garden. Honeybees, hoverflies, lady bugs, praying mantis, parasitic wasps, and swallowtail butterfly caterpillars, and butterflies all love dill.

Dill also provides a great defense against aphids, cabbage looper, spider mites and squash bugs.

I will be making a batch of creamy cucumber salad today to compliment the heat from my Buffalo style drumsticks. ?

Dill-icious Creamy Cucumber Salad
2 large cucumbers (or 5-6 pickling cucumbers)
1 vidalia or red onion
1 c sour cream
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 tbsp chopped dill
1/4 c vinegar (white or apple cider)
1/4 c sugar

Slice cucumbers and onion and set aside. Mix together remaining ingredients. Combine cucumber and onion with dressing and enjoy! ?
